What is Medical Services? Medical services refers to all the health and medical services provided to an individual, such as, but not limited to, doctor services, nurse and medical specialist services, dentist services, medical services or hospital services. In the US, there are many medical services provided by different health insurance companies and government agencies. Medical services can be paid for either through a fee or a premium. Some health plans also offer services known as "fee for service", which cover only a portion of the doctor's office visit, medical tests and/or procedures. People who may need this service from the nurse practitioner or family doctor include people with chronic illness or disease, women during pregnancy, nursing home care, developmentally disabled, and the elderly. These categories sometimes overlap. Some patients may also need a specialist doctor to treat them specifically. The patient will pay a co-pay for the medical services that he or she receives. A person who may need nursing care from a family doctor includes children who have health issues such as allergies or diabetes, or whose parents require special medical care because of serious disabilities. People who may need home health care services from a licensed nurse include those recovering from a medical procedure, or who are undergoing therapy and require close monitoring. Home health care service may also be needed by people who are not able to perform activities of daily living. A licensed registered nurse or nursing aide can provide care services to these individuals. A person here may need medical services from an optometrist, who is an expert in vision and eye care, and who treats disorders of the eye such as glaucoma. Optometrists perform a variety of eye exams and prescribe various eyeglasses and contact lenses. Home health care may also be provided by an optometrist or other experts. Other health care systems offer treatments such as acupuncture, counseling, physical therapy, and massage. An individual who experiences pain from hemorrhoids, digestive problems, or arthritis may need to use a medical system for urinary incontinence and bowel control. A person who experiences a loss of sensation in his or her extremities may benefit from a device that makes the hands and arms stronger. Pain management may also be a benefit of a system such as this one. An integrative health practice includes a patient's overall well being. For example, a dietitian might recommend that a patient receive dietary supplements to help him or her maintain a healthy weight. Nutritional counseling is also part of the treatment for many diseases and conditions, and may be required for certain medical services. Medical systems may include many parts, such as x-ray machines, heart monitors, and blood pressure machines. Many medical systems also contain electronic patient records or EPRS, which contains personal health information about the patient that can be accessed by health professionals. The term "medical information technology" describes the entire process of delivering health information technology to the patient.
